Nature and Human Nature in Ancient Greek Philosophy and Its Reception

Edited by Melina G. Mouzala

This book includes papers on Nature and Human Nature focusing on Ancient Greek Philosophy and its Reception. The book encompasses papers of academics who participated in the homonymous Symposium which was held in October 2023 at the Netherlands Institute at Athens.

All papers deal with philosophers, philosophical works and treatises which belong to the broad subject of the inquiry into nature, including human nature.

A large period in the History of Philosophy is covered, beginning from Classical Antiquity (Plato and the Socratics [Phaedo]), running through Late Antiquity (Middle Platonism [Atticus], Galen, Alexander of Aphrodisias), and concluding with the Latin Patristic tradition, Late Neoplatonism, and Byzantium (Augustine, Simplicius, Philoponus, Maximus the Confessor). The authors systematically investigate crucial issues that permeated the whole of ancient Greek philosophical thought and tradition; human nature and physiognomy in Plato and the Socratics, the parallel between the ordering activity of the world-soul (which is also called “nature”) and that of the individual soul in Middle Platonism, the relation between individual and universal nature in Galen, the parallel in the Patristic scholarship between Augustine’s and Maximus’ doctrines of will and their differences, Alexander of Aphrodisias’ view of the Peripatetic theory regarding the relation between the universe and the First Cause, Alexander of Aphrodisias’ view of nature and the causal roles he assigned to nature and the Prime mover, nature and soul as principles of motion and change in Aristotle’s Physica and De caelo according to the theories of Alexander of Aphrodisias, Simplicius and Philoponus.

The book is intended for specialists, students and anyone interested in Ancient Greek Philosophy.

The Virtual Mummy: Unwrapping a Mummy by Mouse Click

The VIrtual Mummy

The computer has entered our everyday life and did not stop before the field of mummy research. It helps researchers not only in the non-destructive examination of mummies, but even allows the creation of a “virtual mummy”, which visitors of the exhibition The Secret of the Mummies – Eternal Life at the Nile, but also you (with limited functionality) can unwrap on the screen. The object is a 2300-year-old mummy of a female, aged about 30 years.

Open Access Journal: Al-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā: The Journal of Middle East Medievalists

[First posted in AWOL 16 October 2023, updated 16 November 2025]

ISSN: 1068-1051
Al-ʿUsur al-Wusta

A peer-reviewed, open access journal since 2015, Al-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā: The Journal of Middle East Medievalists defines the medieval Middle East expansively to include all geographies with prominent Muslim political, religious, or social presences between the rough parameters of 500-1500 CE. We seek previously unpublished articles featuring original research and analysis, including those that push the boundaries of the medieval Middle East as defined above. We are open to scholarship from any discipline or interdisciplinary formation and are committed to balancing pieces addressing new or underrepresented areas of inquiry with those contributing to more well-established fields.

We publish research articles on a rolling basis, as they complete the review and production process, and we welcome submissions at any time. In addition, we publish short critical editions and translations, essays on pedagogy, conference reports, and book reviews. Full issues of al-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā are released toward the end of each calendar year, usually in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association.

The open access publication of al-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā is made possible by Middle East Medievalists (MEM), an international, non-profit association of scholars. To support the journal, please consider joining MEM or renewing your MEMbership today!

Cover page of Conceptualizations of the Moon
Egyptology has as its object of study the history, practices, and conceptual categories of a culture that was remarkably prolific in terms of written texts, art, architecture, and other forms of material culture. The knowledge of Egyptologists, archaeologists, linguists, geologists, and all other professionals who are involved in research related to Ancient Egypt reflect the interdisciplinary approach that is needed to make sense of such a wealth of information. The peer-reviewed articles of the UEE are written by the world's leading scholars.
In the coming decade we will continue to build the content of the UEE, while a separate web site, the UEE Full Version, will be available starting in 2010. The full version will have enhanced searches, such as a map-search functionality, alphabetical and subject browsing, in-text links, explanations of terminology for non-professionals, an image archive, and Virtual Reality reconstructions. In addition, a Data-Access Level is under development, which links articles with the results of original research. Information on the development of the UEE Full Version can be found at http://www.uee.ucla.edu.
