Moses Wilhelm Shapira's infamous Deuteronomy fragments – long believed to be forgeries – are authentic ancient manuscripts, and they are of far greater significance than ever imagined. The literary work that these manuscripts preserve – which Idan Dershowitz calls »The Valediction of Moses« or »V« – is not based on the book of Deuteronomy. On the contrary, V is a much earlier version of Deuteronomy. In other words, V is a proto-biblical book, the likes of which has never before been seen. This conclusion is supported by a series of philological analyses, as well as previously unknown archival documents, which undermine the consensus on these manuscripts. An excursus co-authored with Na'ama Pat-El assesses V's linguistic profile, finding it to be consistent with Iron Age epigraphic Hebrew.
V contains early versions of passages whose biblical counterparts reflect substantial post-Priestly updating. Moreover, unlike the canonical narratives of Deuteronomy, this ancient work shows no signs of influence from the Deuteronomic law code. Indeed, V preserves an earlier, and dramatically different, literary structure for the entire work – one that lacks the Deuteronomic law code altogether.
These findings have significant consequences for the composition history of the Bible, historical linguistics, the history of religion, paleography, archaeology, and more. The volume includes a full critical edition and English translation of V.

Thucydides in the ‘Age of Extremes’ and Beyond. Academia and Politics

Edited by Luca Iori and Ivan Matijašić

ISBN 978-1-8380018-4-1

The essays collected in this volume explore over a century of readings of Thucydides, from the years immediately preceding the First World War up to the present day. Our purpose is to reflect on some underexplored areas of Thucydidean reception within different academic traditions and political contexts, as well as reconsidering the more recent and controversial developments in the Fortleben of the Athenian historian in the fields of Strategic Studies and International Relations. The interaction between politics and academic practice is the thread that connects our collective efforts. We seek to adopt an approach that is less confined to the reuse of an ancient text in a merely political vein, but opens up to investigate wider issues concerning the history of classical scholarship and the process of consolidation of the social sciences in the academic systems.

Conexiones Culturales y Patrimonio Prehistórico

book cover

osé C. Martín de la Cruz is a pioneer scholar whose contributions both to Prehistory and the diffusion of cultural heritage have been acknowledged at an international level. The present volume pays homage to his professional career, by inviting more than 40 international scholars who tackle the study of Prehistory and the dissemination of heritage from several thematic and temporal perspectives. It is thus a multidisciplinary volume in which scholars from different fields investigate Prehistory from its origins to the period immediately before Greek and Phoenician colonization; at the same time, they explore the different ways in which Prehistoric heritage is transmitted. The volume is composed of four different but related parts, organized chronologically and starting with the most recent Prehistory. The first part deals with the intercultural connections which took place during the Bronze Age in the Mediterranean area. The second part goes back in time and investigates the first settlements and early food producing societies. The third examines our remote past and its natural environment. Finally, the closing part includes a set of multidisciplinary chapters which study prehistory from several different scientific fields. All in all, this volume becomes a scientific meeting point where senior professors and junior scholars get together to offer their scientific findings, at the same time as they pay homage to Professor Martín de la Cruz.

The link between leisure and contemplative activity, as paradigmatically developed in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, has a pre- and long post-history reaching into present day philosophy and theology. Aristotle's melding of leisure with theory is explained anthropologically because human nature's capabilities are perfectly realised in a contemplative form of life. The contributions in this volume investigate models of connecting theory and leisure in the history of ideas with regard to the question of an anthropological foundation of theory.

Philo's treatise De Migratione Abrahami offers an allegorical commentary on Gen 12. Abraham's migration from Chaldea to the Land of Israel is interpreted by Philo as the soul's migration from the world of the senses to God. The present edition of Philo's text includes a detailed introduction to his life and thought as well as a new German translation of his treatise with annotations and essays illustrating the text from the perspective of various disciplines. The accompanying essays initially place the work in the context of contemporary Judaism, both in Alexandria and the Land of Israel. This is followed by an appreciation of Philo as a representative of Middle Platonism in the imperial period. Two further essays focus on central themes of the Philonic treatise, namely knowledge of God and the experience of exile interpreted philosophically. Two concluding studies compare Philo's figure of Abraham to his image in the New Testament and in Thomas Mann's novel Joseph and his Brothers.

The Cahiers « Mondes Anciens » are an electronic scholarly publication dedicated to the wide spectrum of studies of the ancient societies. They focus primarily on the Greek and Roman worlds, but take into account the global history of the Ancient Mediterranean and are open to a anthropological and comparatist approach which goes beyond this frame. Launched in 2009, they publish researches related to the activity and interests of the Centre Anthropology and History of the Ancient World (ANHIMA) UMR 8210, created by the merging of the « Centre Louis Gernet de recherches comparées sur les sociétés anciennes », the « Centre Gustave Glotz de recherches sur les mondes hellénistique et romain » and the group « Phéacie, Pratiques culturelles dans les sociétés grecque et romaine ».

The contributors to this volume discuss the formation and transformation of ancient concepts of authorship, specifically among those types of texts that are classified as »religious literature« – whether Greco-Roman, early Jewish, and early Christian. In twelve case studies spanning the time from Ben Sira to Tertullian, various ways of how authors considered themselves to be individual producers of texts and religious voices are carved out. The volume presents authors who fashion themselves either as orthonymous, anonymous, or pseudepigraphic writers, and who share the idea of being »religious agents«. The search for these religious voices undertaken here is a valuable contribution to both research in ancient »Autorforschung« and the religio-historical study of how religious knowledge was produced in the ancient Mediterranean world.

Is there any point in praying? In one of his philosophical lectures, Maximus of Tyre turns to the subjects of prayer and the conception of the divine that underlies its representations. Can God be influenced? And if so, would human beings have any notion what it makes sense to pray for? Starting with a set of examples from mythology, the philosopher discusses the philosophical implications of petitionary prayer and argues for a better understanding of prayer as an ongoing conversation with the divine. Along with the text of the lecture and an annotated translation, this volume provides an extensive introduction to the author and his work, and contributions from the fields of philosophy, classical archaeology, New Testament studies and early Church history, which locate the oration in the context of contemporary religio-philosophical debates about prayer and its social historical aspects.

In Lucian's Dialogues of the Gods the cosmos of the traditional Greek gods is presented in a decidedly ironical-satirical light, which in the second century CE was able to – inter alia – provide fledgling Christianity with interesting arguments in its fight against the old religion. In recent decades, these twenty-five vivid dialogical scenes have enjoyed only limited attention, which is a good reason to present them anew in a fresh volume. It offers an introduction, a substantially revised Greek text, a new translation with notes and six essays from various disciplines (classical philology, ancient history and patristics) with the intention of comprehensively elucidating the meaning and the relevance of these dialogues between gods not only within the context of their own times, but also beyond.
