Catalogue of the Archives of Charles Townley in the British Museum

Catalogue of the Archives of Charles Townley in the British Museum
Hill, Susan J.

After his death Charles Townley’s collection of classical sculpture was acquired by The British Museum where it is now displayed in the Wolfson Galleries. In 1992 his personal papers were purchased, placed with the Museum’s Central Archive and subsequently arranged and listed by the author. This resultant catalogue lists the records in their distinct series, such as diaries, correspondence, financial papers and research notes. It is preceded by an introduction to Townley’s life and the history and arrangement of the archive. A comprehensive index enables the researcher to search for names and topics

KOUTROULOU MAGOULA | ΚΟΥΤΡΟΥΛΟΥ ΜΑΓΟΥΛΑ

 KOUTROULOU MAGOULA | ΚΟΥΤΡΟΥΛΟΥ ΜΑΓΟΥΛΑ

the site | η θέση

Koutroulou Magoula is a tell site  located in Fthiotida, Central Greece, on the south-western edge of the Thessalian Plain, about 2.5km south of Neo Monastiri and near the village of Vardali.

Koutroulou is part of a rich archaeological landscape, with several other Neolithic tell sites nearby. Its main occupation phase spans the end of the seventh millennium and the first two centuries of the sixth millennium BCE. The ongoing excavation, which started in 2001, has revealed an extremely well-preserved and architecturally elaborate site, the inhabitants of which shaped its space of habitation through a range of substantial, probably communal works, such as terraces and perimeter ditches.

Prehistoric Metal Artefacts from Italy (3500–720BC) in the British Museum

Prehistoric Metal Artefacts from Italy (3500–720BC) in the British Museum
Bieti Sestieri, Anna Marie;  Macnamara, Ellen; Hook, Duncan
The current conception of the absolute chronology of the Italian Copper Age to the end of the Early Iron Age is set out in this new title from the British Museum. Some 850 objects have been arranged chronologically from the Copper Age, through the Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. Within these headings, the objects are organised typologically e.g. axes, swords etc. A major result of this study has been the reassembly of several groups of bronzes probably originally from hoards. Each entry includes a description, bibliography and comparanda and line drawing or photograph.

AWOL is a project of Charles E. Jones, Tombros Librarian for Classics and Humanities at the Pattee Library, Penn State University

AWOL began with a series of entries under the heading AWOL on the Ancient World Bloggers Group Blog. I moved it to its own space here beginning in 2009.

The primary focus of the project is notice and comment on open access material relating to the ancient world, but I will also include other kinds of networked information as it comes available.

The ancient world is conceived here as it is at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University, my academic home at the time AWOL was launched. That is, from the Pillars of Hercules to the Pacific, from the beginnings of human habitation to the late antique / early Islamic period.

AWOL is the successor to Abzu, a guide to networked open access data relevant to the study and public presentation of the Ancient Near East and the Ancient Mediterranean world, founded at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago in 1994. Together they represent the longest sustained effort to map the development of open digital scholarship in any discipline.

AWOL is syndicated to Facebook and Twitter.
