A Bibliography of Studies on Egyptian-Mesopotamian Relations

This bibliography lists all scientific articles and books known to me that focus on ancient Egyptian-Mesopotamian relations. At present, the bibliography has 682 entries, works published between 1850-2021, and books and articles written in more than ten languages.1 Before the presentation of the list, a few words on compilation method are called for. Mere textbooks or source publications, shorter lexicon entries, and review articles are excluded. By Egypt, I also (in addition to Egypt proper) mean Libya of Egypt’s third intermediate period and Kush of Egypt’s 25th dynasty.

By Mesopotamia, I mean the land between the Euphrates and the Tigris, thus including cities or lands like Mari and Mitanni and excluding cities or lands like Ebla and Hatti. The list has been compiled in two stages. In the first stage (conducted in 2017 and 2021), various library databases and the bibliographies of important works about Egyptian/Mesopotamian interaction were examined. In the second stage (conducted in 2021), the online bibliographical resources “Online Egyptological Bibliography” (abbr. OEB, and available at and “Keilschrift-Bibliographie online” (abbr. KeiBi online, and available at were surveyed, with the aid of strategic keywords.

The compilation of books and articles were (for practical reasons) title-centred, meaning that works were included largely based on Egyptian and Mesopotamian keywords in book and article titles.
