The online database “Persons and Names of the Middle Kingdom and early New Kingdom” (PNM) is developed as part of the projects “Umformung und Variabilität im Korpus altägyptischer Personennamen 2055–1550 v. Chr.” and “Altägyptische Titel in amtlichen und familiären Kontexten, 2055-1352 v. Chr.”, funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. The database contains Egyptian Middle Kingdom and early New Kingdom personal names, people, written sources, titles, and dossiers of persons attested in various sources. Version 5, currently available online, covers the sources from the reign of Mentuhotep II to the reign of Amenhotep III. The database is a work in progress. Along with additional sources, future versions will also include better translations and classification of names and titles as well as more elaborate datings.

Information about the database

Persons and Names of the Middle Kingdom and Early New Kingdom

To make sure that you access the most complete and up to date version of the dataset, please select the latest version in the Version select box in the upper right corner of each webpage.

Version 1, published in 2018, was limited to the sources of the Second Intermediate Period. Version 2 (August 2021) was the first to cover the entire timeframe of the Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period. Version 3 (January 2022) introduced changes to the database structure and the web-interface and includes the hieroglyphic renderings of age epithets and classifiers (the latter only for a part of the dataset). Version 4 (August 2023) includes corrections and updates to the Middle Kingdom dataset (adding ca. 1500 attestations). The current Version 5 is the first to include early New Kingdom material, from Ahmose to Amenhotep III (adding ca. 14000 attestations to the Middle Kingdom corpus).

With the addition of the New Kingdom material in Version 5 I was forced to add “and early New Kingdom” to the original database title “Persons and Names of the Middle Kingdom”. Both titles can be used to cite the database.

When citing data from this online database, please always specify the version consulted (it is shown in the top right corner).
