Koç University Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Centre for Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED) seeks to be a leading research center on the Mediterranean world focusing on the history, archaeology, art history, ancient languages, architectural history, cultural heritage and related disciplines. AKMED’s mission is to pioneer and support national and international academic studies in the above-mentioned disciplines.
AKMED defines the Mediterranean world as a common memory space, and a network of relations and cultural interaction among the civilizations surrounding the Mediterranean through history. AKMED encourages interdisciplinary and international scientific studies related with the Mediterranean world; it considers the Mediterranean civilizations as a common cultural heritage of mankind and focuses on the sustainable preservation of this heritage.
