Powers and Legitimacy in the Ancient World: From Nanterre to Venice in Memory of Pierre Carlier

Powers and Legitimacy in the Ancient World: From Nanterre to Venice in Memory of Pierre Carlier - cover image
Antiquity Studies vol. 4

The history of politics in the ancient world was one of the central interests of Pierre Carlier, who passed away in 2011. The tribute of this book is dedicated to the scholar who strongly desired and cultivated the scientific and didactic relations between the Universities of Venice and Nanterre, in which the trace of his teaching becomes the thread that holds together the reflections on some central aspects of ancient political experience: the progressive definition of the power of the king and the tyrant, the difficult dialectic between the aristocracy and the other components of society, the echoes of more ancient themes in the political legitimation of the Hellenistic and Roman ages.
