Database of Classical Scholars

The Database of Classical Scholars is a multi-faceted database that aims to provide biographical and bibliographical information on classical scholars from the period associated with classical scholarship as currently understood, from the end of the eighteenth century and the publication of F.A. Wolf's Prolegomena zu Homer (1795) to the current day. Each entry is accompanied by an appreciation of the scholar's career by an expert and where possible, a portrait. This is a work of international cooperation with an advisory committee composed of experts in the history of classical scholarship not only in North America, but in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy.

The project is endorsed by the Society for Classical Studies.

Wikipedia: Women's Classical Committee
Wikipedia currently hosts over 200 biographies of classicists, and when the Women's Classical Committee looked in January 2017 only approximately 10% were of women. This project is our initiative to take steps towards redressing this gender imbalance, by training and encouraging classicists - whether archaeologists, epigraphers, historians, linguists, numismatists, philologists or anyone else working within this varied discipline - to edit Wikipedia with this focus.

We hold editing sessions online each month and welcome new members to our friendly group. See our events and workshops page for more info.

Directory of North American Egyptologists
Since 1988 the UAEE has published the Directory of North American Egyptologists which provides the names and contact data for professional Egyptologists and current doctoral students in North America, as well as listing current and recent doctoral dissertations in Egyptology. From 1996 to 2014 the DNAE was co-published with the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago.

Le terme d'orientaliste est d'abord attaché à une discipline savante qui s'est inscrite dans des cadres institutionnels solides. Il y eut aussi des cohortes de voyageurs qui ont parcouru l'Orient sous toutes ses latitudes et en ont rapporté quelque chose: artistes et savants, hommes célèbres et modestes médiateurs, éminents professeurs et aventuriers ambitieux, auteurs de chefs-d'œuvre reconnus ou de travaux obscurs. Ils sont un millier d’auteurs ou d’opérations éditoriales collectives que l’on peut rattacher à la francophonie, dans son acception la plus large, tant géographique qu’historique.
Ce dictionnaire élaboré par les soins d'une équipe pluridisciplinaire de spécialistes entend montrer que la population des agents et porteurs de ces savoirs est infiniment variée et qu'elle échappe aux simplifications réductrices. Elle nous offre un échantillon d'humanité qui, avec ses grandeurs et se travers, doit faire finalement la trame d'un certain humanisme.
Ce site vient en complément du Dictionnaire des orientalistes de langue française publié chez Karthala en 2008, avec l'appui de l'Institut d'Études de l'Islam et des Sociétés du Monde Musulman (IISMM).
On trouvera ici en ligne les éléments descriptifs de cet ouvrage (préfaces, table des auteurs, liste des entrées, liste des sigles, etc.), mais également des éléments venus en compléments ou en correctifs.
En complément, on trouvera des recensions critiques et des notices inédites qui viennent s'insérer dans la liste de la version imprimée. En correctif, les inévitables errata du volume mais aussi des notices venues en remplacement ou controverse avec une notice existante. On trouvera aisément ces ajouts signalés par un lien hypertexte dans la liste des entrées et la liste des auteurs. Ils seront intégrés dans l’édition refondue (la 3e) pour paraître en novembre 2012.

Directories of Scholars

The 2009 [13th] edition of the Mesopotamian Directory, has just appeared at the website of the Oriental Institute. I see in passing that one can now subscribe to their Monthly e-Newsletter by filling in a form at the OI home page. If this is the E-Tablet they have been circulating, it is well worth filling in your name and address.



The appearance of the Mesopotamian Directory makes me think about the other lists of scholars I use. Which is to say that generally speaking I don't use such directories, except under unusual circumstances. Googling almost always gives fast and reliable contact information for most people - even for some people not associated closely with institutions which tabulate the coordinates of their affiliates.

But some that I have used are:

I also use the online directories of scholarly and professional societies, which I won't list here because on the whole they are restricted to access by their members.
