This volume is one of a series of archaeological resource assessments commissioned by Jersey Heritage as part of an Archaeological Research Framework for the island. The study of the Iron Age in Jersey has been dominated for many decades by the extraordinary horizon of hoards – perhaps a dozen or more – associated with the Gallic Wars in the mid-first century BC. More recent research is beginning to expand our knowledge of the Iron Age beyond that narrow focus. The Gallo-Roman occupation of the island has in contrast been somewhat overlooked, largely because of a perception that there are few sites and relatively little evidence for that period, but here both archaeological investigation and the careful recording of metal-detected finds is rapidly improving our understanding of the Roman era. This volume provides an up-to-date assessment of the state of knowledge so far, setting it in the wider context of the Channel Islands and north-west France, and suggesting directions of research for future investigations in Jersey.
