The Art of Making in Antiquity: Stoneworking in the Roman World
 The Art of Making in Antiquity is an innovative digital project designed for the study of Roman stoneworking. Centred on the photographic archive of Peter Rockwell, this website aims to enhance current understanding of the carving process and to investigate the relationship between the surviving objects, the method and sequence of their production and the people who made them. The resource comprises around 2,000 images, largely Roman monuments with a selection of contextual sources, accompanied by analysis of the working practices underlying their making.

Ninevah Excavation film

Ninevah Excavation film
The footage (at present) has been attributed to Nineveh excavator Reginald Campbell Thompson (1876-1941), a British Assyriologist, epigrapher and archaeologist who had been excavating in Iraq on and off since 1904. Little is known about the film’s history to date, but research continues.

Em sessão ordinária de 23 de Novembro de 1954, o Conselho Escolar da Faculdade de Letras de Coimbra aprovou, por unanimidade, a criação do Instituto de Arqueologia.

A proposta de criação do Instituto foi apresentada ao Director da Faculdade pelo Dr. João Manuel Bairrão Oleiro, então assistente encarregado da regência da cadeira de Arqueologia. Tendo disposto, logo à partida, de uma sala, o Instituto viveu os seus primeiros anos graças à dedicação daquele docente e ao entusiasmo de alguns alunos que o Dr. Bairrão Oleiro soube reunir e estimular.
Instalou-se uma biblioteca especializada, constituída por volumes aqui depositados pela Biblioteca da Faculdade de Letras e pelo Instituto de Estudos Históricos da mesma Faculdade; financiamentos da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e do Fundo Sá Pinto (gerido pelo Senado Universitário de Coimbra), bem como dotações obtidas através do orçamento ordinário da Faculdade, permitiram a aquisição de novas obras, com as quais a biblioteca se foi alargando.

Desde o início, ficou na dependência do Instituto uma galeria de réplicas, em gesso, de inscrições romanas e medievais portuguesas, organizada nos inícios do século XX pelo Doutor António de Vasconcelos. Esta galeria constituiu o núcleo de uma colecção, valiosamente acrescentada em 1958 com a oferta, pelo Prof. Doutor Francisco Gentil, de um espólio procedente da necrópole de Alcácer do Sal...

Beall’s List: Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers

Anyone wishing to publisher with an open access publisher should choose a publisher carefully. One way to do this is to review Jeffrey Beall's list of predatory publishers:

This is a list of questionable, scholarly open-access publishers. We recommend that scholars read the available reviews, assessments and descriptions provided here, and then decide for themselves whether they want to submit articles, serve as editors or on editorial boards.  In a few cases, non-open access publishers whose practices match those of predatory publishers have been added to the list as well. The criteria for determining predatory publishers are here.

We hope that tenure and promotion committees can also decide for themselves how importantly or not to rate articles published in these journals in the context of their own institutional standards and/or geocultural locus.  We emphasize that journal publishers and journals change in their business and editorial practices over time. This list is kept up-to-date to the best extent possible but may not reflect sudden, unreported, or unknown enhancements.
