Manar Al-Athar منار الآثار: Free multi-media resource for the study of the Middle East
The Manar al-Athar website, based at the University of Oxford, aims to provide high resolution, searchable images for teaching, research, and publication. These images of archaeological sites, with buildings and art, will cover the areas of the former Roman empire which later came under Islamic rule, such as Syro-Palestine/the Levant, Arabia, Egypt, North Africa and Spain. The chronological range is from Alexander the Great (i.e., from about 300 BC) through, the Islamic period to the present. It is the first website of its kind providing such material labelled jointly in both Arabic and English. We will also be publishing related material, both online and on paper, in English and Arabic.
Manar al-Athar is Arabic for "Guide to Archaeology" and has been chosen because Manara, in Egypt, refers to both the Lighthouse of Alexandria (the Pharos) and to minarets. This conveys the transition, and often continuity, covered by the chronological range of the material.

Ubi Erat Lupa: stone monuments (sculptures, reliefs, inscriptions, architectural pieces etc.)

[First posted 19 April 2010. Updated 5 August 2018]

Ubi Erat Lupa
Current amount of data: 26679 monuments and 48406 pictures / Letzte Änderung: 1. Oktober 2016. Ubi Erat Lupa is now maintained by Friederike and Ortolf Harl and Jakob Egger at the new address lupa.at. UBI ERAT LUPA is a partner project of EAGLE (Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy) and is being maintained by 'CHC - Research Group for Archaeometry and Cultural Heritage Computing' and hosted by ITS at the University of Salzburg

The picture database www.ubi-erat-lupa.org (short form lupa) contains stone monuments (sculptures, reliefs, inscriptions, architectural pieces etc.).

lupa is a non-commercial project dedicated to informing scientists and interested laypersons. The project’s scope is from prehistoric stone monuments to around the time of Justinian (500 AD). Due to its inception in Vienna, most project data at the moment is from the mid- and south-eastern european region.

lupa is open to expansion in any direction."

IMAGO: The Roman Society Centenary Image Bank

[First posted in AWOL  3 June 2015, updated 16 July 2018]

IMAGO: The Roman Society Centenary Image Bank
http://www.romansociety.org/typo3temp/pics/1_ef31e4ef95.jpg
IMAGO was conceived in 2010 to commemorate the Roman Society's centenary. It is intended to be used by students, teachers, lecturers and everyone interested in the archaeology, history and material culture of ancient Rome.

Photos are donated and available to use and share for educational and research purposes only, and downloadable images can be quickly saved or copied into presentation software such as PowerPoint.
Click here for the complete list with brief descriptions of all photos in the IMAGO database (downloads as an Excel spreadsheet).

The majority of the photos are digitised copies of the Society's slide collection, which grew to include 3,500 slides - the best of the collection was scanned and enhanced to improve access to this valuable resource. Although the quality of some slides, mostly donated in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, is variable, they are also important records of how Roman monuments and their environments (and the people studying these remains) have changed over time. Many digital images are also available and these will grow as more photos are donated.

Donating photos of new and well known sites ensures users of IMAGO will continue to be able to access images of the lastest Roman finds and discoveries.

https://medihal.archives-ouvertes.fr/public/logo_medihal_1.jpg

MédiHAL includes 21,007 images, many of them of archaeological sites. Among these are 1946 images of the site of Palmyra, most of them supplied by Ifpo Institut Français Du Proche-Orient.

By default iconicarchive uses the simple search, which assumes, that in the majority of cases people are searching for an additive combination of keywords. Therefore, when searching with the simple search, all entered search terms MUST be present TOGETHER in the keywords. For the possibility to exclude search terms explicitly from a query, the boolean search must be used. For a more guided search, try the keyword index.

Fulltext search (simple search or search with boolean operators)
