Local Law Under Rome

Multiple legal traditions endured under the rule of the Roman Empire. Greek, Egyptian, Aramaic and Jewish legal cultures were reshaped through their constant contact with Roman legal administration. Provincials negotiated their traditions within an environment of legal multiplicity, as Roman Law was made into a tool of Empire. Consequently, the activity of these legal communities reflects a complex network of relations, dependencies and exchanges. Within this imperial environment of entangled legalities, no legal system can be studied in isolation. LOCAL LAW UNDER ROME seeks to provide a comparative perspective for studying these ancient legal systems. It allows scholars to assess the nature of their relationship and reconstruct the legal history of different communities under Rome.
