The German Research Foundation (http://dfg.de/) is considering a project to optimize OCR for its c. 400,000 books printed in Germany or in German anywhere from 1500 through 1800. I have posted some thoughts about the significance — I think, potentially immense significance — that this superficially technical exercise could have. I am hoping to provoke discussion and feedback that will, in turn, be helpful to my colleagues involved in the evaluation process.
