The Provincia Cilicia: Urban development in the context of political and economic change

Dominique Krüger [Author]
D. Krüger, Die Provincia Cilicia: Städtebau im Zeichen politischer und wirtschaftlicher Veränderungen, Byzas 27 (Istanbul 2024)

The study deals with the urbanization of the geographically very diverse region of Cilicia in south-eastern Turkey, with a temporal focus on the Roman period. The region has only been sparsely researched archaeologically, so that the work fills a corresponding research desideratum. The phenomenon of urbanization is examined using the example of a large number of towns and their public buildings. Although urban building activity reached a peak during Hadrian's reign and then again under the Severans, the entire period of the Principate is presented in detail, regional characteristics and trends in architecture are worked out and the origins and influences that shaped them are examined. The book not only brings together a large amount of material, some of which is difficult to access, and presents it in an extensive catalog, but also makes numerous individual observations that come together to form a large picture of the urban development of an entire region on the eastern edge of the Roman Empire
