New at ARTStor: Dura-Europos Documents

Collections relating to antiquity recently announced on the ARTstor blog

Of Barsabbathas to Heliodoros; from a soldier at Antioch to a centurion at Dura; military and personal matters | Language: Greek | Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University
ARTstor Digital Library has collaborated with Yale University to share more than 300 images from the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library’s extraordinary Yale Papyrus Collection. These papyri were excavated at Dura-Europos, Syria, a Hellenistic, Parthian, and Roman city on the Euphrates River where extensive remains of civil and military archives were found in the 1930s. The collection includes private letters, official and religious documents, legal deeds and contracts, biblical texts, and literary works in Greek, Latin, Demotic, Coptic, and Arabic. These images join more than 18,000 images from the Yale University Art Gallery’s Dura-Europos and Gerasa Archives already in the ARTstor Digital Library, which include photographic documentation of the architectural remains and mosaics of these buildings, as well as glass vessels, pottery, and lamps, and plans and drawings from the Yale excavation.
