Nubia is a region in Africa, extending between the first and the sixth
cataracts of the Nile. The research material covering the period from
the introduction of Christianity in Nubia (in the sixth century) to the
late Middle Ages is extremely interesting and extensively enriches
general knowledge about the development of Medieval art. This volume
contains four articles, dealing with Christian Nubian and related art.
The article by Catherine Jolivet-Lévy presents the programme of Nubian
sanctuaries in a broad Mediterranean context. The text by Tasha
Vorderstrasse takes up a little explored thread of Nubian manuscript
decoration, while the other two, by Aleksandra Sulikowska-Bełczowska and
Małgorzata Martens-Czarnecka refer to the Nubian iconography of the
Virgin Galaktotrophousa (breastfeeding) and the Archangel Michael.

Materiał badawczy, obejmujący okres od wprowadzenia chrześcijaństwa w
Nubii (w szóstym wieku) do późnego średniowiecza, jest niezwykle
interesujący i znacznie poszerza naszą wiedzę na temat rozwoju sztuki
średniowiecznej. Tom zawiera cztery artykuły dotyczące sztuki
chrześcijańskiej Nubii i sztuki z nią związanej. Artykuł autorstwa
Catherine Jolivet-Lévy prezentuje program nubijskich sanktuariów w
szerszym, śródziemnomorskim kontekście. Tekst Tashy Vorderstrasse
podejmuje mało zbadany wątek dekoracji nubijskich manuskryptów. Artykuły
Aleksandry Sulikowskiej-Bełczowskiej i Małgorzaty Martens-Czarneckiej
dotyczą ikonografii Matki Boskiej Galaktotrophousy (karmiącej piersią) i
archanioła Michała. Należy mieć nadzieję, że Nubia Christiana II będzie
ciekawą lekturą nie tylko dla specjalistów, ale również dla szerokiego
grona czytelników zainteresowanych ikonografią sztuki średniowiecznej.
