Open Access Journal: Teiresias Journal Online

[First posted in AWOL 189 March 2023, updated 30 July 2026]

ISSN: 2751-6946

Teiresias Journal Online continues the previous Teiresias. Online Review and Bibliography of Boiotian Studies by means of a new series. Faithful to the pioneering spirit of its predecessor, which has been an open access publication from 1971, TJO is free from subscription fees. It is published twice a year. Issues can be downloaded from this platform and shared freely.

The mission of the journal is to inform readers about research on Boiotia in antiquity. To this end, and to fuse exchanges with references to scholarship in various languages, the core of TJO is its bibliography. Like the ‘old’ Teiresias, the new sequel also publishes archaeological reports, announcements of scholarly events and a Work in Progress section. Coupled with the book series Teiresias Supplements Online, TJO comes out of the Department of Ancient History at Münster University.

The TJO editors acknowledge and honor the scholarship of Albert Schachter, doyen of Boiotian Studies and oikistes of the Teiresias enterprise .

Concepts of Time and Space as Literary Devices in Second Temple Judaism

Alexandra Grund-Wittenberg, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany; Martina Kepper, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany
book: Chronoi – Topoi

Jewish authoritative writings of the Second temple Period had to adopt to total different religious as well as political circumstances their adressees had to face. Inspired by the idea of Paul Kosmin, that the imposture of a total new imperial time regime by the Seleucid rulers provoked autochthonous reorientations in means of time and space, the contributions of this volume examine if this holds true to the writings that circulated during the contemporary Second Temple Period. The methodological approach for the examination is the concept of space-time, or chronotope, already developed by Michail Bakthin for 20th century literature. Focusing on Judaism of the Second Temple turned out to be very fruitful, as we can distinguish between distinct religious-sociologically formed Jewish groups under different spatial conditions (for example “diaspora” vs. core land). They all produced literature in order to cope with the traumatizing experiences of the loss of sacred spaces as well as the transformation processes that, due to the loss of “Jerusalem” as the spatial anchor point, endangered their religious and national identity. Documents of so-called Hellenistic Judaism in the form of the Septuagint as well as of Palestinian Judaism, which becomes tangible in the texts of Qumran, or in the texts of Elephantine all show signs of increased interest in temporal and spatial orientation, remembering or adopting the already known, as well as inventing new anchor points as their special “chronotope”. In sum, by establishing their own chronotopes, Judaism in Persian and Hellenistic-Roman times gained resilience and developed strategies to redefine its own identity.

Mediterranea. International Journal on the Transfer of Knowledge
ISSN: 2445-2378

Page Header
Mediterranea is an international journal focusing on various areas of knowledge transfer from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern period, covering the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin, and paying special attention to philological, philosophical, scientific, cultural and religious fields of research.
If there is one thing that characterizes the powerful process of knowledge exchange between the Near East and the Latin West it is the passion for knowledge and the discovery of its secrets that inspired scholars of the period. This led to long journeys and rich encounters, and the mutual exchange between cultures that have repercussions up to the present day.
Mediterranea is a project focused on combining efforts, by linking highly qualified research institutions with expertise in the field of transfer of knowledge within the different areas of study that will be addressed in the journal.
