The first impression one gains from a summary overview of the epigraphic finds from the tell of Ras Shamra is one of an ancient city packed with written documentation: from the Royal Palace, with its huge archives, to everywhere in the center and around the northern and southern parts of the town, collections of texts were held in private archives. Any place that an archaeological sounding was made, a more or less significant set of written documents has been found. Ugarit, even more so than the great capital cities of Mesopotamia and Anatolia, appears in this regard to be a paradigm of the triumph of writing as a decisive instrument in the cultural and economic development of the ancient Near East. Indeed, with its twelve public and private archives, Ugarit could rightly be labeled “the endless archive”.

Miquel Civil (Sabadell, 1926 - Chicago, 2019) va escriure aquest Esbós de gramàtica sumèria en una estada a Barcelona i el va utilitzar a les classes de llengua sumèria que va impartir a l’Institut del Pròxim Orient Antic de la Universitat de Barcelona durant el curs 2002-2003. Malgrat que va quedar inacabat, ofereix aportacions tan originals com la interpretació que fa Civil dels anomenats «prefixos de conjugació» per expressar la categoria de la veu, i representa el resum de la concepció de la llengua sumèria que tenia l’eminent lingüista.
Miquel Civil (Sabadell, 1926 – Chicago, 2019) began writing An outline of Sumerian grammar in Catalan during his stay in Barcelona, and used it in the language classes he gave at the University of Barcelona’s Institut del Pròxim Orient Antic during the 2002-2003 academic year. Although unfinished, the resulting volume offers many original contributions, such as Civil’s interpretation of the so-called “conjugation prefixes” as an expression of the category of voice, and comprises an effective summary of the eminent linguist’s conception of the Sumerian language.

We tell the story of an international team of university undergraduates, graduate students, professional staff, and professors who lived and worked together to discover how people lived in the Cypriot countryside 4000 years ago. For about six weeks each year between 2004 and 2019, project members dedicated themselves from sunrise to sunset to the recovery and analysis of the archaeological and ecological remains left behind by Bronze Age Cypriots, illuminating the intimate details of daily life in antiquity.
The evidence from Politiko-Troullia highlights the emergence of Cypriot community identity as a key element in the development of Cypriot urbanized civilization. Stylized human plank figures and a multitude of butchered deer bones, associated with concentrated evidence of spinning, weaving, and dying, provide compelling evidence for celebration of communal identity through feasting, and social relations conveyed by iconography and textiles. Metallurgical evidence across the settlement suggests that backyard copper smelting and casting was virtually ubiquitous in the households of Politiko-Troullia. Scientific analyses of plant and animal remains portray intensive orchard cultivation, and sheep and goat herding on adjacent hillsides, accompanied by hunting of feral pigs and wild Mesopotamian fallow deer in the Troodos Mountain foothills. Radiocarbon dating defines the lifespan of Troullia between about 2050 and 1900 BCE and establishes the timing of major landscape impacts just after 2000 BCE, when the settlement shifted upslope and abandoned its well in response to accentuated local erosion and downcutting.
Thus, the archaeological exploration of Politiko-Troullia offers a dramatic case study of life in a pre-urban Cypriot community as its inhabitants responded to their changing environment and moulded the social foundations of ancient Cypriot civilization.

Serving the Gods: Artists, Craftsmen, Ritual Specialists in the Ancient World

In the ancient world, from Rome to Egypt, Levant and Mesopotamia, temples were the earthly dwellings of the gods. They also served as important religious, social and economic institutions and therefore were essential organs that influenced both society and economy. Temples demanded complex logistics. From the personnel aspect they required a variety of different specialists, not just ordinary priests. From the material perspective, they needed food supplies, animals for sacrifices, and building materials for construction and renovation. Ultimately, economic resources became visible in the form of financial outlays, landownership and stocks of luxury goods. Gods, like human kings, had their own needs: they demanded workers to serve them, but also material goods and regular supplies of food and drink. Through the texts (inscriptions, papyri, historical records), visual art and archaeological remains we can learn about the workforce of these sacred institutions.
Serving the Gods: Artists, Craftsmen, Ritual Specialists in the Ancient World explores different aspects of serving the gods and temples, with a special focus on human and economic capital. One of the aims of the editors is to foster dialogue between different areas of research on antiquity, including civilizations beyond the Mediterranean region. The various contributions discuss topics such as the social status – ranging from elites to non-elites – of individuals, families, communities connected to different places of worship in different cultures, as well as the economy and organization of temples and their construction.

The in-depth and long-term investigation of the Middle Nubian cultures – the C-Group and Kerma cultures as well as the Pan-Grave Horizon – has fundamentally expanded our understanding of these significant archaeological cultures of the 3ʳᵈ and 2ⁿᵈ millennia B.C. However, since the extensive flooding of the Lower Nubian Nile Valley in the 1970s, modern fieldwork is largely restricted, and our current knowledge primarily relies on older excavations from the 20ᵗʰ century.
The present analysis and re-evaluation of ceramic inventories in Egyptian and Nubian tradition from settlements and cemeteries, with a main focus on the C-Group, aims to address this issue by closing research gaps and opening new perspectives on the interactions of the Middle Nubian cultures. At the same time, the study sheds light on the complex Egyptian-Nubian relations during the pharaonic Old and Middle Kingdoms. The investigation centers on the analysis of ceramic assemblages from the settlement of Elephantine at the First Cataract, which were excavated as part of the »Realities of Life« project of the German Archaeological Institute Cairo. This material is complemented by inventories from six cemeteries associated with the C-Group in Upper Egypt and Nubia, e. g. cemetery N at Aniba. For the first time, inventories of various ceramic traditions and contexts from old and recent excavations are systematically synthesised.
In addition to a detailed qualitative and quantitative presentation of the finds, the work is particularly dedicated to pressing chronological questions. The linking of old material with finds from current excavations in Egypt and Sudan proves to be an important methodological approach for re-evaluating the chronological division established so far.

Luwic Dialects and Anatolian: Inheritance and Diffusion
This book focuses on Luwic languages, bringing together approaches from Indo-European linguistics and language reconstruction and also from other intrinsically related disciplines such as epigraphy, numismatics and archaeology, and shows very clearly how these disciplines can benefit from each other. The volume gathers together the most recent results of investigation in the field, and is the natural extension of recent work completed by a research group on Luwic dialects over a number of years. Among the thirteen contributions, fitting neatly within the Luwian and other Anatolian languages, a rich variety of subjects are covered: epigraphy, grammar, etymology, textual interpretation, and archaeological context.
