Byzantine gold coins, with their intricate designs and rich historical context, serve as remarkable artifacts that illuminate the connections between ancient civilizations. These coins, prized for their beauty and symbolism, functioned not only as a medium of exchange but also as instruments of imperial propaganda, conveying messages of authority, faith, and cultural identity across vast territories. Their discovery in China offers compelling evidence of the extensive trade networks and cultural exchanges along the Silk Road. At the Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations (IHAC), these extraordinary finds have become a cornerstone for exploring the interactions between the Byzantine Empire and ancient China. To facilitate this research, IHAC is establishing a comprehensive database of Byzantine gold coins discovered in China under the guideline of EpiDoc. This database is the first to focus specifically on Byzantine gold coins discovered in China, integrates detailed numismatic analysis with historical and archaeological insights, offering students and researchers a unique opportunity to delve into the complexities of East-West connections.
