PhD Research in Assyriology: Showcasing the next generation of scholars in the history, archaeology, and languages of the ancient Near East

Welcome to PhD Research in Assyriology! This site exists to promote the research being carried out by PhD students in the field of Assyriology. What’s that? It’s a broad term that covers all scholarly fields related to the study of the ancient Near East in the time of the cuneiform cultures. That means the time between the fourth millennium BCE and the first century AD, in the historical regions of Mesopotamia, Syria and the Levant, Iran, and Anatolia. Assyriology includes the history, archaeology, and art history of the ancient Near East, as well as its languages: Sumerian, Akkadian (Babylonian and Assyrian), Hittite, Elamite, Hurrian, and others.

PhD Research in Assyriology is an initiative of the International Association for Assyriology (IAA). To find out more about “Assyriology”, the IAA, our annual conference (the “Rencontre” or “RAI”), or to hear the latest news, please visit the IAA website. If you like what we do, please consider joining the IAA. Your support helps us offer a range of prizes and awards to make life a little less difficult for students and early career scholars, and to celebrate their successes.

Ancient Greek Music in Performance

Stefan Hagel - Christine Harrauer (edd.)
Symposion Wien, 29. Sept.–1. Okt. 2003

The collection of essays is based on the papers held at a symposium that was held to discuss various “practical” aspects of ancient Greek music. The individual contributions address organological questions of tuning and playing techniques, ancient and modern performance contexts and expectations, as well as the notorious topic of musical “ethos”. The accompanying CD contains, in addition to musical examples of passages referred to in the papers, the recording of a public performance that was part of the symposium. Singers and instrumentalists from four countries present their approaches to the ancient melodies that are extant; especially when different interpretations of the same piece can be compared, the complex questions involved in any re-creation of ancient music become obvious immediately. Table of contents: J.C. Franklin, Hearing Greek Microtones / S. Hagel, Twenty-four in auloi. Aristotle, Met.1093b, the harmony of the spheres, and the formation of the Perfect System / G. Lawson, Ancient European lyres: excavated finds and experimental performance today / M.J. Pernerstorfer, Carl Orffs hesperische Musik / E. Open Access Journal: State Archives of Assyria Bulletin I (1987) - X (1996)

[First posted in AWOL 21 September 2011 Updated 30 March 2021 (linked now to the Internet Archives)]

State Archives of Assyria Bulletin
ISSN 1120-4699
State Archives of Assyria Bulletin (SAAB) is published twice a year as an international forum for discussion on Assyria and Assyrian texts. The journal is concerned with articles illustrating the history, philology and linguistics of the texts stemming from the ancient Assyrian state archives, and any related topic. The journal was conceived as part of the Neo-Assyrian Text Corpus Project and was originally intended to supplement the SAA series of text publications by offering a vehicle for the publication of new texts and of detailed commentary on texts or text genres that would be out of place in the format established for the SAA volumes. SAAB quickly outgrew these narrow limitations and now accepts articles on any topic relating to Assyria in its largest sense, including philology, history, geography and archaeology.

Although a part of the Neo-Assyrian Text Corpus Project, SAAB’s Editorial Board is completely autonomous and makes all decisions concerning the acceptability of contributions, scheduling, and financing for the journal. Manuscripts to be considered for publication should be submitted to the journal’s Editor or Assistant Editor and may be in any major Western language.

This is a fundamentally new in-depth analysis of the finances of the Roman state in the years 49 to 42 B.C. It not only assembles all the ancient literary evidence for financial affairs in this period, but also analyses the contemporary coinages in minute detail, concentrating on problems of dating and localisation.

Using Logeion: Quick Guide

Here at Kosmos Society we have been continuing our exploration of the digital tools that help us in the translation study groups and for carrying out word searches and word studies. Many of us have made use of Logeion, for both Greek and Latin. This online reference has a number of useful features, and provides access to lexicons and dictionaries in a selection of languages other than English. It also includes references to a number of Greek and Latin textbooks (including Hansen & Quinn and Wheelock, which we are using at Kosmos Society), making it ideal for learners and students.
Logeion is available online in a browser version; but additionally for those with iPad or iPhone you can download it as a free app and use it offline.

This community-generated video demonstration and the associated Quick Guide show a few examples of its functionality, and are designed to encourage you to try it for yourselves during the course of your studies and researches. Please note that this demonstration is based on the browser version; for the app on iPad and iPhone please view the screenshots on the Logeion site.

This downloadable handout provides worked examples fully illustrated with screenshots for you to try out for yourselves.

Aigeira 2. Die mykenische Akropolis. Grabungen 1975 - 1980

Eva ALRAM-STERN

The second volume on the Austrian excavations of the years 1975–1980 on the acropolis of Aigeira aims at a reconstruction of the post-palatial Mycenaean settlement, based on stratigraphy and findings. Spatial analyses were executed on the basis of distribution patterns of installations as well as small finds, pithoi and pottery in situ, showing a settlement consisting of households. Based on family structures, these households are characterized by storage, production of goods, and feasting. Furthermore, the social grade of the inhabitants is underlined by a cult room as well as a fortification evident for a late phase of the settlement.
