The collection of over 12,000 Byzantine coins at Dumbarton Oaks is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The majority of these specimens were catalogued in six print volumes: Catalogue of Byzantine Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and in the Whittemore Collection, edited by Alfred Bellinger (vol. 1), Philip Grierson (vols. 2–3, 5), and Michael Hendy (vol. 4), and Catalogue of Late Roman Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and in the Whittemore Collection, edited by Philip Grierson and Melinda Mays.
With ongoing acquisitions of objects, many of the coins that have entered the collection after the release of the print catalogues have remained unpublished. This online catalogue first presents these specimens, and eventually will provide online access to the full collection.
Using the Catalogue
Search the Catalogue by keyword, authority, date, mint, metal, and denomination. In addition to high-resolution images and object metadata, each record includes a commentary and short-form bibliography (author, title, and page and/or catalogue number). For a full reference list, including abbreviations, see the Bibliography.
On the occasion of the launch of this online catalogue, Cécile Morrisson, advisor for Byzantine numismatics at Dumbarton Oaks from 1998 to 2018, has provided a History of the Collection and of the Unpublished Accessions. A list of Collectors, Dealers, and Donors supplements this history.
Additional resources for coins include do
wnloadable versions of the published coin catalogues and two online exhibits, one featuring Byzantine Emperors of Coins, and the other, Coinage of the Byzantine Empire (alternate link), focusing on the history of the monetary system and its denominations and imperial and religious representations.
Hellenistic Royal Coinages (HRC) is a National Endowment for the Humanities funded project based at the American Numismatic Society in New York City. HRC is a web-based resource for users to learn about, research, and conduct different types of analyses on the coinages produced by the different dynasties and rulers of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East during the Hellenistic period (ca. 323–31 BC). These include the coins struck by (and in the name of) Alexander the Great and those struck by his successors, such as the Seleucids in the Near East and the Ptolemies in Egypt.
This site, the HRC Union Catalogue, allows users to search across all existing HRC type corpora simultaneously. These include: PELLA, a resource that currently focuses on the coinage in the name of Alexander the Great; Seleucid Coins Online, a resource devoted to the coinage of the Seleucid dynasty; and Ptolemaic Coins Online, a resource for the coinage of the Ptolemaic dynasty. In the future we hope to add additional resources for the coinages of other Hellenistic dynasties and rulers including the Antigonid, Attalid, and Bactrian dynasties.
While the American Numismatic Society’s collection serves as the core of all these searchable catalogues, thousands of examples are illustrated by links to coins in other major collections including those in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the British Museum, the Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, and other public collections in the US and Europe.
The British Numismatic Journal (BNJ) is the Society's principal publication, and is the foremost jounrnal for the matters relating to British Numismatics. It contains a number of scholarly articles as well as notes, obituaries, reviews and transactions. The journal is produced annually in hard-back form, and a copy is sent free to all members of the Society.
The British Numismatic Journal is distributed for the Society by Spink. Any queries concerning the purchase of back-numbers or regarding delivery problems should be directed to Spink in the first instance.

Nowadays, in the field of science of antiquity, there are a lot of digital archives and web applications that allow to display ancient entities and artifacts on digital maps. Entities may include, e.g., gods, abstract personifications, historical personages, etc. Artifacts may include coins, weapons, architecture, etc. In particular, ancient coins represent also out-and-out documents that need to be properly studied and analyzed. From the point of view of numismatics, there are not so many web applications enabling researchers to perform an in-depth analysis of the coin iconography.
Some web solutions make it possible to retrieve data and display the location of ancient mints and coin finds on digital maps, but they do not present codified and detailed descriptions of coin iconographies. The Digital Iconographic Atlas of Numismatics in Antiquity (DIANA) aims to fulfill such a gap. With DIANA it is possible to study both “diachrony” and "diatopy" with a new innovative approach starting from ancient coins. In fact, DIANA is a web application that provides an in-depth analysis of ancient coins specifically considering the details of their iconography, chronology, and the geographical location of their mints. Thanks to this approach, DIANA allows a more detailed study of coin iconographies through time and space than other existing web applications. It is a web platform that allows researchers to analyze the “coin iconography” according to time and space through digital maps. In order to build digital maps, the system uses the Cloud Computing Google Maps Platform as a Service (PaaS). A mint can be searched on DIANA considering a target coin iconography through a web form. By means of AJAX requests, data are retrieved on the DIANA's digital archive and they are sent in XML format to the user's web browser. After that, the web browser processes the received data and it forwards a second AJAX request to the Google Map PaaS that returns a digital map displaying the mint and ancient coins.

Summary
The original Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards (IGCH), edited by Margaret Thompson of the ANS, Otto Mørkholm of the Danish cabinet in Copenhagen and Coin Kraay of the Heberden Coin Room in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, was published in 1973 by the ANS for the International Numismatic Commission. The work contains inventory listings of 2387 hoards, covering the whole of the ancient Greek numismatic world.
Online IGCH was devised by Sebastian Heath and Andrew Meadows as an attempt to create an open and accessible version of IGCH on the world Wide Web using the principles of Linked Open Data. The test version was housed within the Nomisma.org namespace before its migration to its own domain in February 2015.
Work on the original project was enabled by funding from the American Numismatic Society, Stanford University, and the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council. Data was contributed by the Nomisma project based at Paris IV Sorbonne. Subsequent work to create the new site has been supported by the International Numismatic Council, under whose auspices the project has now been incorporated. Technical realisation of the new IGCH site is by Ethan Gruber.
The current site is a prototype, and will undergo enhancement through the course of 2015. It is the long-term aim of the project to incorporate all published Greek coin hoards as part of the broader Online Greek Coinage initiative.
