A Comprehensive Bibliography on Syriac Christianity

First posted in AWOL 17 January 2012, updated 22 October 2020]

A Comprehensive Bibliography on Syriac Christianity
It was during the sixteenth century in Renaissance Europe that, as a result of the efforts of the Catholic and Protestant scholars of the New Testament, Syriac studies became a part of European intellectual life. [1] Since then, the number of scholarly publications on various matters related to the history, culture and religious life of Syriac-speaking Christians has only increased. As these publications are in a variety of languages, and many of them scattered through journals and periodicals belonging to various academic fields, it is often difficult to obtain precise information on what has already been published on one or another aspect of Syriac Christianity. Our project aims to fill the evident gap in the bibliographical resources and provide a convenient and easily accessible tool for the worldwide scholarly community. The ultimate goal of this project is to create and launch an on-line database on Syriac Christianity that will be updated on a regular basis and available free of charge to the international scholarly community...

At present, the database includes more than 14.000 bibliographic entries. Some of these entries have been retrieved from already existing on-line bibliographic databases on biblical and patristic studies, such as the Index Theologicus of Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, the Bibliographic Information Base in Patristics of Université Laval and some others.
Furthermore, to a significant degree our database is founded on the following bibliographical works, without which it would have been impossible to compile:

e-Clavis: Christian Apocrypha

[First posted in AWOL 6 February 2016, updated 19 April 2019]

e-Clavis: Christian Apocrypha
e-Clavis: Christian Apocrypha is a comprehensive bibliography of Christian Apocrypha research assembled and maintained by members of the North American Society for the Study of Christian Apocryphal Literature (NASSCAL). Entries for each text include a detailed description (a summary, the various titles used in scholarship, clavis numbers, and identification of related literature), an inventory of manuscript sources (with online images where available), an extensive bibliography (including online resources), and information about the text’s use in iconography and popular culture.

One of the primary goals of this resource is to encourage interaction and collaboration among scholars of the Christian Apocrypha. Entries are prepared by scholars working with the texts; users are encouraged to contact the contributors with suggestions for improvement or enhancement. The success of e-Clavis is contingent upon the willingness of users and contributors to exchange information and consistently update the entries.

e-Clavis is looking for volunteers to contribute entries for unassigned texts. Contact members of the editorial board for more information.

Aten: Bibliography on Akhenaten and Nefertiti

Aten: Bibliography on Akhenaten and Nefertiti
Ashen Zakharyan
Foreword
Akhenaten was the 10th pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt who reigned over the country for about 17 years about 3.500 years ago. He was known as a heretic king, religious revolutioner. He is especially noted for abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing worship centered on the sun disc Aten, which is sometimes described as monotheistic. When he ascended the throne his name was Amenhotep IV, but in his sixth year of rule he changed it to “Akhenaten". He has succeeded his father Amenhotep III. Akhenaten has established a new capital city Akhetaten (Horizon of Aten) at modern Amarna. Aten was the only god and Akhenaten was only intermediary between the Aten and the people.
Akhenaten was married to Nefertiti, one of the most famious queens of ancient Egypt. Nefertiti’s origins are uncertain. Some historians believe that she was a foreign princess and others believe that she was Akhenaten’s relative, daughter of Ay.
After Akhenenaten’s death Egypt returned to the worship of the old gods and the name and image of Akhenaten were erased from his monuments in an effort to wipe out the memory of his ‘heretical’ reign.
The present bibliography is a comprehensive guide to articles and books on Akhenaten and Nefertiti, aimed at scholars, students of Egyptology and general public as well.

BIBLIOGRAPHIES BY TOPIC
In order to understand fully the damage that has occurred to Syrian cultural heritage sites, it is important to obtain a comprehensive understanding of these sites prior to the civil conflict that began in 2011. Academic publications, excavation reports, archaeological surveys, and damage assessments are just some of the many sources that can paint a broad picture of pre-conflict cultural heritage in Syria, which in turn proves instrumental to our documentation efforts and preservation planning. Below you will find a series of bibliographies that contain both published and unpublished works in a variety of languages, including English, Arabic, French, German, and Italian, among others. We encourage you to seek out these sources and to learn more about the cultural heritage that is currently at risk.

Bibliographies of Neutestamentler/innen in the German Language Sphere (BNGLS)

Bibliographies of Neutestamentler/innen in the German Language Sphere (BNGLS)

BNGLS

This page will be devoted to Bibliographies of Neutestamentler/innen in the German Language Sphere (BNGLS). More specifically, it will contain bibliographies of the English publications of German-language-sphere scholars as well as links to their web pages, academia.edu pages, blogs, and twitter. I know, of course, that it is neither complete nor up-to-date. Therefore, if you are a German-language-sphere scholar who would like me to add/update your English publications or links, please email me at wcoppins@uga.edu, with the subject line BNGLS. Likewise, let me know if you want me to revise my list of your research areas (but this must be kept short enough to fit on one line). I have included some scholars who are not New Testament scholars in the strict sense but whose research is relevant for New Testament scholarship. If an author publishes extensively in English, I have sometimes provided only one link, e.g., Eng/WP. Sincere apologies to all the German-language-sphere scholars whom I have missed in compiling this list (just let me know and I’ll add you).

KEY: Eng = English Bibliography; WP = Web page; Bib = Bibliography; Acad = Academia.edu page; TW = Twitter; GFN = Germanforneutestamentler posts; DNB = Deutsche Nationale Bibliotek; Wiki = Wikipedia; AV = AudioVideo; apocrypha = ancient Christian apocrypha; JCD = Jewish-Christian Dialogue; LSup = Lord’s Supper/Eucharist. NPOP = New Perspective on Paul; NTT = New Testament theology; OTNT = Old Testament in the New Testament; SM = Sermon on the Mount.
