DCLP: Digital Corpus of Literary Papyrology

DCLP: Digital Corpus of Literary Papyrology

DCLP offers information about and transcriptions of Greek and Latin literary and subliterary papyri preserved on papyri, ceramic sherds (ostraka), wooden tablets, and other portable media. It is built on the model of papyri.info, relying on its own versions of the Papyrological Navigator (PN) for searching and browsing and Papyrological Editor (PE) for peer-reviewed curation of texts. The site aims to do for ancient literature preserved on papyri what papyri.info does for Greek and Latin documents. An ultimate goal is also to provide search and browse functionality across the entire corpus of Greek and Latin papyri--documentary, literary, and subliterary alike.
DCLP aggregates material from the Leuven Database of Ancient Documents (LDAB), Bibliographie Papyrologique (BP), Thesaurus Herculanensium Voluminum, and the Parma Medical Project, and depends on close collaboration with the Department of Classics at the University of Würzburg and the Duke Collaborative for Classics Computing (DC3). The project was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft as part of their "Bilateral Digital Humanities Programme." ...read more.

Open Access Digital Library: Bibliothek Goussen

The Goussen library collection is a specialist library for oriental church history. It contains prints in Western classical and modern languages, but predominantly prints in oriental languages such as Syrian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Arabic, Armenian and Georgian languages from the 16th to the 20th century (the focus is on the 18th and the 19th century). The former owner Heinrich Goussen (1863 – 1927) collected nearly every print within the language groups that had ever been published about the subject. The collection contains numerous rare or valuable oriental prints. There could hardly a collection be put together as completely as here, not even from the holdings of large European libraries.

PAVONe: Platform of the Arabic Versions of the New Testament

PAVONe: Platform of the Arabic Versions of the New Testament
Home
Since 2012 our Digital Humanities Centre at the University of Balamand has been developing an online database for the Arabic text of the Gospels. The database is accessible online and it's open for scholars.
The database contains the following sections/services:
  1. The "About" section: It includes a presentation of the project and the methodology used.
  2. The "Manuscripts" section: It allows the user to browse the Gospels manuscripts transcribed in the database. Two browsing modalities are offered: the first one allows the scholar to visualize the manuscripts in their geographical location using a geotagging feature; the second one allows the filtration of the manuscripts by a variety of parameters (date, language...). Both modalities lead to the same resources and give the researcher the possibility of displaying some codicological and paleographical properties of the manuscripts and their content as well.
  3. The "Lectionary" section: It gives the liturgical structure of the lectionary as used by the Rum Orthodox Church and allows the researcher to browse the corresponding pericopes in the lectionary manuscripts. All the transcribed texts are published with a copy of the manuscript containing the reading. This allows the scholar to examine the original digital photo of the text and to compare it with our reading.
  4. The "Citations" section: In this section, we identified all the citations and allusions of the Gospels verses in the literature produced by Christians and Muslims in the first millennium. We limited our sources to the works mentioned in  the monumental work: "Christian-Muslim Relations. A Bibliographical History". This section enables the researchers to browse all these citations and allusions and to compare them with their parallels in the lectionaries and/or continuous texts of the Gospels.
  5. The "Search" section: this module allows the researcher to look for a specific verse in all the contents of the database regardless of the type of the source. The user can search, for example, for a verse in the "Muslim-Christian citations" and lectionaries at the same time...

Welcome to the Quranic Arabic Corpus, an annotated linguistic resource which shows the Arabic grammar, syntax and morphology for each word in the Holy Quran. The corpus provides three levels of analysis: morphological annotation, a syntactic treebank and a semantic ontology.
The Quran is a significant religious text written in Quranic Arabic, and is followed by believers of the Islamic faith. The Quran contains 6,236 numbered verses (ayāt) and is divided into 114 chapters.

An example verse from the Quran:
(21:30) Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
  • Version 0.4 Released - new and updated linguistic features in this version of the corpus
  • Word by Word Quran - maps out the syntax of the entire Quran, with analysis and translation
  • Quranic Grammar - traditional Arabic grammar (إعراب) illustrated using dependency graphs

How you can get involved

This project contributes to the research of the Quran by applying natural language computing technology to analyze the Arabic text of each verse. The word by word grammar is very accurate, but ensuring complete accuracy is not possible without your help. If you come across a word and you feel that a better analysis could be provided, you can suggest a correction online by clicking on an Arabic word.

he Project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus (PAL) is dedicated to the edition and study of the Arabic and Latin versions of Ptolemy’s astronomical and astrological texts and related material. These include works by Ptolemy or attributed to him, commentaries thereupon, and other works that are of immediate relevance to understanding Ptolemy’s heritage in the Middle Ages and the early modern period up to 1700 A.D.
The PAL online database currently offers the following items:
  • Works: a cursory description of Arabic and Latin Ptolemaic works arranged in three categories: A=Authentic Works; B=Pseudepigrapha; C=Commentaries upon A and B
  • Manuscripts: a catalogue of Arabic and Latin Ptolemaic manuscripts
  • Glossary: a Greek-Arabic-Latin-English glossary of astronomical and astrological terms
  • Images: high definition reproductions of Ptolemaic works from a selected manuscript or early printed edition
  • Texts: searchable transcriptions of Ptolemaic works prepared from a selected manuscript or early printed edition 
The PAL database was first published in December 2016 and is being implemented almost on a daily basis, but visitors should be aware that it is still very much in progress.

The Arabic and Latin Glossary is a dictionary of the vocabulary of the Arabic–Latin translations of the Middle Ages. It unites the entries of all existing Arabic–Latin glossaries in modern editions of medieval works.

The Glossary has a double aim: to improve our understanding of the Arabic influence in Europe, especially with respect to scientific vocabulary, and to provide a lexical tool for the understanding of Arabic and Latin scientific texts.

It is currently based on 42 sources, which cover medicine, philosophy, theology, astrology, astronomy, mathematics, optics, botany, and zoology. The texts were written by the following Arabic or Greek authors:

    Aristotle
    al-Biṭrūǧī (Alpetragius)

The Glossary is growing constantly. At the moment, it contains the entire letters A to C and parts of the letter D (dact–descr, desu–dies, dile–disi).

The Latin-Arabic version currently comprises 3.505 Latin lemmata with 10.256 corresponding Arabic expressions and 20.775 searchable quotations. The Arabic-Latin version comprises 5.584 Arabic lemmata

Glossarium Græco-Arabicum: A lexicon of the mediæval Arabic translations from the Greek
The database Glossarium Græco-Arabicum makes available the files of a lexical project, intended to open up the lexicon of the mediæval Arabic translations from the Greek. It contains images of the filecards (ca. 80,000) which have not yet been published in the analytical reference dictionary A Greek and Arabic Lexicon (Leiden: Brill, 1992ff.), and comprises Arabic roots from the letter jîm to the end of the Arabic alphabet.

From the eighth to the tenth century A. D., Greek scientific and philosophical works were translated wholesale into Arabic. This activity resulted in the incorporation and reorganization of the classical heritage in the new civilization which, using Arabic, spread with Islam.

The object of project Glossarium Graeco-Arabicum is to make readily available to scholars the direct information which the Graeco-Arabic translations contain for several areas of research. These include:

– the vocabulary and syntax of Classical and Middle Arabic;
– the development of a scientific and technical vocabulary in Arabic;
– the vocabulary of Classical and Middle Greek;
– the chronology and nature of the translation movement into Arabic; and
– the establishment of the texts of Greek works and their Arabic translations.

Classification of the meanings of the Arabic terms, based on state-of-art science, rather than on speakers' naïve knowledge, see[1].

Multilingual dictionaries were digitized and integrated. Only the semantic features (definitions, synonyms, translations) are currently displayed, soon the morphological features.
 Ontology Top Levels
The top levels of the Arabic Ontology tree are the most abstract concepts in Arabic; they are philosophically and logically well defined. This figure shows only the top three levels.

Our immediate goal is to make all of the functionality from the original Alpheios Version 1 Firefox extensions available in Version 2 for major browsers and on mobile devices, expanding at the same time to support more languages, including Persian, Syriac and Hebrew. Longer term our goals are manifold, from enhancing the reading experience to include audio and imagery as well as linguistic aids and games, to developing a deep, data-backed understanding of how and why people learn languages and what the effect is on the brain.

APD - The Arabic Papyrology Database
The Arabic Papyrology Database is a tool enabling you to access the editions of Arabic documents written on different material such as papyrus, parchment or paper. Those productive editions are an often unraised treasure for almost every aspect of Islamic history up to the 16th c. A.D. 

The APD comprises a total of 11664 documents. For 3453 out of these, we give both the full text and the metadata, while for 8211, we give the metadata only. The tool 'Documents' allows to search for documents and read their text in different layers. The tool 'Text' accesses single words or combinations of words - perfect for investigating linguistic peculiarities. The tool 'Lexicon' gives you direct access to all of the lexicon, incl. Greek, Coptic, etc. words. Each document is also provided with its metadata, amongst others place and date of origin or its genre as for instance a contract of lease or a petition.

The Arabic Papyrology Database is the first electronic compilation of Arabic papyri. It is a non-commercial project running under the patronage of the International Society for Arabic Papyrology (ISAP) and a partner of the Trismegistos metadata project of Greek, Demotic, Coptic, Arabic, etc. documents. Access is free via the Internet.
