Introduction

Kelsey Museum of Archaeology Online Exhibitions

Kelsey Museum of Archaeology Online Exhibitions
The Museum's permanent exhibition of artifacts is carefully chosen and presented by Kelsey curators to represent and explain the range of objects in our collections. It was reconceived and reinstalled in the William E. Upjohn Exhibit Wing in 2009.

In addition to the permanent exhibition,a portion of the Museum is dedicated to special exhibitions that change on a regular basis. Topically oriented, or focused on specific Kelsey fieldwork projects or Museum initiatives, these exhibitions present artifacts from our own collections as well as objects borrowed from museums around the world. Many of these special exhibitions are preserved in online versions once they have closed.

Online Exhibition: Ashkelon: A Retrospective. 30 Years of the Leon Levy Expedition

Ashkelon: A Retrospective
30 Years of the Leon Levy Expedition
http://www.imj.org.il/en/exhibitions/2016/ashkelon/images/strip.png
For thousands of years Ashkelon served as a gateway between the lands of the Mediterranean and the southernmost reaches of the Levant. First settled in the late Chalcolithic Period (ca. 4000 BCE), it rose to prominence in the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1825 BCE), when the Canaanites surrounded it with a massive rampart encompassing an area of some 150 acres. From this point on, Ashkelon dominated the region. Over the years it was also inhabited by many other peoples, including Egyptians, Philistines, Phoenicians, Romans, Fatimids, and Crusaders. In 1270 CE, the Mamluk sultan Baybars dismantled its fortifications in an effort to deny crusading Europeans a foothold in the region, and the long history of ancient Ashkelon came to an end.

The 1920–1922 excavations of the Palestine Exploration Fund yielded the first glimpse of the ancient city, revealing finds from its Roman phase. This was the first licensed expedition conducted under the British Mandate, and the finds became part of the original collection of the Rockefeller Museum.
Subsequent excavations conducted by the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon from 1985–2016 systematically outlined the ancient site's development from the time of its origins to its final days.

Following the vision of founders Lawrence E. Stager, Leon Levy, and Shelby White, the excavations at Ashkelon have profoundly transformed our understanding of this fascinating hub of Mediterranean trade. The exhibition celebrates the successful completion of the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon, which has just finished its final season after thirty years of intensive research.

Trismegistos Editors

Trismegistos Editors
Currently 20894 (modern) editors and authors, responsible for 1040086 Trismegistos text editions (1589-), including descriptions for unpublished texts; for 47117 Bibliographie Papyrologique entries (1932-2012); and for 5019 entries in the Demotistische Literaturübersicht (1822-).

The work is not yet finished: some 70,000 editions still lack an editor; for almost 52,000 editions we have not yet resolved the pragmatic 'e.a.' (= et alii); the (book) editors of the BP and DL bibliographies have not yet been converted; the BP entries are based on the work done in the Papyrological Navigator in 2012, so more recent entries are NOT included.

Nevertheless we have come a long way since January 2015. This was when a PAPYLIST post enquired about a way to look for papyri edited after 1980. This gave us the idea to standardise the Trismegistos information about editors of ancient texts, and afterwards also about the authors in bibliographies such as the Bibliographie Papyrologique and the Demotistische Literaturübersicht.
Mark Depauw and Yanne Broux have published an article on editors and editorial practice for Greek (& Latin) papyrological texts (Depauw / Broux, ZPE 198 (2016), pp. 202-210). A similar study into editions and publications in the field of Demotic studies is in preparation. Eventually we would like to compare papyrology with epigraphy. But for that last investigation our dataset needs to be complete.

Trismegistos Editors is a new tool. There are still doubles in the editor list, and the information about the editors is still limited in many cases. Information about date of birth and - where applicable - of death is often missing, the latter being especially useful to determine posthumous publications. Nationality and university affiliation is also absent in most cases, which e.g. makes studies about international cooperation currently impossible. Also, we would still like to add many more links to VIAF (Virtual International Authority File). You can send us an email with additions or corrections for your own personal data. Should you want to help us with any of this in a more systematic way, please do contact us. We will be eternally grateful.

Finally, much of the information about editors is presented through networks. For more information about this, check out our Trismegistos Networks page.

Biainili-Urartu
Stephan Kroll, 21-01-2016
This website is devoted to archaeological and historical research in the area of the ancient near-eastern kingdom of "Biainili", better known by the Assyrian name "Urartu". This is the area of Eastern Turkey, North-Western Iran, Armenia and parts of Azerbaijan.
The intention is to inform about recent developments in the area. The contributions of this website are often written in German, sometimes in English. But it is planned to publish them more and more in English for better understanding and distribution.

ANS Digital Library: Ebooks

ANS Digital Library: Ebooks

Over its 150-year history, the American Numismatic Society has published hundreds of monographs. Many of these were scanned by the Google Books project and are now openly accessible through HathiTrust. However, these scanned books provide little functionality for keyword searches or linking to related resources in the archives or numismatic collection of the ANS. As a result, we are publishing fully functional Open Access ebooks through our Digital Library, including EPUB and PDF derivatives for mobile devices.
